Beckham Calls Brave Kirsty
Monday, August 1, 2005
David Beckham last night phoned Kirsty Howard with a message of encouragement after she spent the weekend battling for her life.
The England captain and former Manchester United star made the call as support poured in from around the world for the nine-year-old who inspired the country with her fund-raising for Francis House Children's Hospice in Didsbury.
Yesterday, Kirsty appeared to be pulling back from the brink at the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital, Pendlebury. Her condition had become critical on Friday night when she lost consciousness and was put on a life support machine.
But by Saturday evening, after an incredible struggle, she was taken off the ventilator and was able to breathe alone.
Last night she was able to talk, draw and take the call from Beckham. The two became friends after she led out the England team in their crucial World Cup qualifier against Greece. Beckham opened the Commonwealth Games in Manchester in 2002 with Kirsty, when they handed a baton to the Queen.
A friend of Beckham, said: "He thinks the world of Kirsty and is really worried for her."
