Beckham Still Captain
Thursday, October 14, 2004
England boss Sven Goran Eriksson has dismissed speculation that he could dump David Beckham as captain and replace him with Michael Owen.
Owen struck the winner as captain in last night's 1-0 victory in Azerbaijan on a day that Beckham apologized for coming clean over being deliberately booked on Saturday against Wales.
But Eriksson said: "Owen has now scored 28 goals in 65 games for England and that is a fantastic record.
"Before the Wales game there were a lot of discussions about Owen's position. But he did very well on Saturday and he has done very well again tonight.
"It was an important goal and a very nice goal, even if people are still criticising his form for Real Madrid."
On Beckham, Eriksson said: "That there should even be a doubt that he should be captain - no way. I've never doubted it."
Eriksson said: "I appreciate his apology. But that should be the end of the matter."
