Beckham out of Real Mallorca game

Real Madrid will be without midfielder David Beckham for their final league game of 2003 against Real Mallorca on Sunday after the England captain failed to recover from a thigh injury in time.

Beckham played all 120 minutes of Real's exhausting 4-3 King's Cup victory over Leganes in midweek and his efforts clearly took their toll.

"It's a serious problem and we couldn't even wait until the morning of the game to see how he is," coach Carlos Queiroz explained on Saturday.

"We have other players with injury problems, too. Let's hope they don't turn into big problems ahead of the match."

Leaders Real need to beat Mallorca on Sunday to make certain of topping the Primera Liga standings going into the festive break.
